Crystals, Stones and Rocks – The Basics

Crystals… I don’t get it – we’ll I didn’t at first

For years students and colleagues would approach me with something wrapped delicately in paper, linen or bagged in gossamer, protected by angels’s feathers and the wishes of unicorns. They would be so gentle with this item, their eyes nearly misting with love, reverence and connection. Their voice would drop to near whisper as they would offer it to me.

“Here, you have to feel this …”

Ever so tenderly, I would take the rock, stone or crystal and hold it for a moment – eyes closed in quiet, pious reflection. Listening to the owner extol the virtues and vibration of this particular wonder of minerals. I was sure I’d “feel” it – this time.

And then very much like Charlie Brown in his Halloween special my response was inevitably, “It’s a rock …” “I got a rock…” You see, I felt nothing. No vibration, no humming, no mystical, magical experience for me. Nothing but cool, hard smooth or rough surface. Nothing more.

Crystals – the truth about vibration

That is until one day about a decade or so ago. I was in a metaphysical store and happened to pick up a crystal; it sort of spoke to me.

I’m not saying it said, “Kimberly, come over here, I need to talk to you.”

I just felt a pull from it. So I picked it up. The only way I can describe it is that this crystal hums for me. A very high vibrational humming. And from that moment forward I’ve been able to pick up vibrations from rocks and crystals and other “inanimate” objects.

“The law of vibration states that anything that exists in our universe, whether seen or unseen, broken down into and analyzed in its purest and most basic form, consists of pure energy or light which resonates and exists as a vibratory frequency or pattern. That includes crystals, rocks and stones!

You are made of cells, which are made of atoms, which are made of particles, and those particles are really just vibrating energy. We are more empty space than physical stuff; more vibration than mass. And we can be strongly impacted — either positively or negatively – by vibrational energy. So, you have science to lean on when it comes to energy healing methodologies.” ~ Kimberly Rinaldi

So, like all other tools, you have to understand rocks, crystals and stones amplify YOUR thoughts and feelings.  And during the time I couldn’t connect it was because that was where my energy was. Once connected, you’ll find they can be used as a focus for enhancing many aspects of your life. They can change the energy around you.

And then it became a collection

Like potato chips, you may start off with only one or two, but once you start collecting you’ll find that they serve different purposes or you just plain like how they look and feel – so you’ll keep collecting more.

You may find you have favorites. You can charge or dedicate specific ones to help you fulfill a particular purpose, like keeping your space grounded.  There are so many uses for them.

I have rocks, stones, crystals, feathers, shells and other “enhancers” throughout my home, office and retails spaces. They make me happy and help balance my spaces.

Your – ahem – collection

And when the time comes to clear things of their residual cosmic dust and debris you can do that too. Just like anything you bring into your space, FIRST you want to make sure:

  1. You Love it
  2. You have a home for it
  3. You’re going to use it – yes, admiring it on a shelf counts! Sometimes.

Otherwise – have you seen an episode of hoarders??? Remember I said, We are more empty space than physical stuff; more vibration than mass. And we can be strongly impacted — either positively or negatively – by vibrational energy. It is important that you only surround yourself with people and things that enhance your energy. And while somethings do initially, they can change. They can take on negative vibration. They can get out of control – hoarders, remember.

When things go South

The year after my dad passed, I was helping my mom clear out her guest room. She had a wicker trunk that had been pretty beat up from use, cat claws and the vacuum. It was split and frayed. Wouldn’t close. And didn’t hold anything anymore. It was falling apart. I suggested she toss it and we’d go get something that worked better for the space.

My mother comes from hoarders. No exaggeration.

  • Hoarding runs in families.
  • Onset is often preceded by a stressful or traumatic life event.
  • Items take on special significance such as an emotional connection, being part of one’s identity, or offering a sense of safety and security.
  • A sense of responsibility to fulfill the potential of an item or not to be wasteful.
  • Typically acquiring and/or having trouble discarding items that have little to no value (e.g., broken lamps, a new rice cooker when you already own 2, stacks of expired coupons, etc.)
  • Experiencing positive feelings when they acquire items, and/or relief from fear, sadness, grief and other negative emotions the opposite of what is experienced when asked to discard items.

She lost her shit.

“Do you know how hard I had to fight your father to get me that trunk!”

“I paid good money for that trunk!”

“I can paint it, turn it around and cover it with a comforter… it’s still good – even if I can’t use it!

She ranted and raved. She fought to keep something that brought on seriously negative energy, negative memories and negative thoughts. For me that meant one thing and one thing only – get rid of it. Energy and intention remember. It’s all energy and intention.

In lieu of tossing it, we opted to clear the space it was in. Did it help? No, ultimately she tossed it when she realized every memory she had tied to it was negative and uncomfortable.

Keeping the energy of your collection clear and positive

Here are some of my favorite ways to cleanse and clear a rock, stone or crystal so that its energy serves you best.

  • Place it under cool running water
  • Leave it in sunlight and moonlight for a 24-hour period
  • Place it out during a full moon
  • Bury it in salt
  • Use sage, incense, or tobacco smoke to smudge it
  • Use Reiki energy on it
  • Meditate with it
  • Pray over it

You can improve the atmosphere in a room at home or in your workplace with gentle colored crystals in a place where there are challenges of energy such as personality clash or a need to improve positive energy. Just place them in a small dish and set your intentions over them. One more time – all together – It’s all about energy and intention.

Tell me about some of your experiences with rocks, stones and crystals. I’d love to hear about them!
